Whether a family business or simply multiple partners, the first step is to speak with each person individually to get a sense of priorities, concerns and goals. With that background, we are better equipped to facilitate a group discussion, work through critical topics, and create a preliminary scenario for transition.
We do a brief estimate of value. This is critical for three purposes. It sets a baseline for growth regardless of when and how a transition takes place, it helps further define the transition scenario and it gets everyone on the same page: owner(s), family and advisory team members. All team members need to be working from the same foundation going forward.
We like to understand who your current advisors are (attorney, CPA, estate planning attorney, financial advisor, etc.). If there are gaps, we can propose advisors who we know and trust. An advisory team that functions well together is critical to a successful, optimal transition – from a family harmony perspective as well as in optimizing financial outcomes for all involved.
We do an assessment of the business, in depth. We look at it as if we are buying it, looking for issues and opportunities. Then we recommend value growth initiatives: those actions that will fix any issues, minimize risk and set the stage to optimize your exit plan.
We review the recommendations with the leadership team, validate and prioritize. We will then launch into implementation, assisting as needed along the way.
This starts to build as early as the initial discussions and then, over time, we will refine the exact structure of the sale / transition. We consider legal, tax and accounting concerns, along with potential family issues, as necessary.
The preparation will accelerate as we get closer to that transition date. We coordinate all of these efforts with your advisory team to get you through to a successful transition, meeting everyone’s needs in a thoughtful and transparent manner. This may be a third-party sale, a generation-to-generation transfer or other appropriate structure.
